4 Aug : Meditation evening
Dé guides us in an evening of meditation. Meditation is one of the foundations of Buddhist practice. It allows us to understand our own minds, to strengthen our resolve and concentration powers, and it is part of the formula for reshaping our lives to the better. All welcome, beginners and advanced.
11 Aug : Khandhas - The Aggregates
Lionel gives this important talk on Buddhist philosophy. The Buddha studied the characteristics of our mind, body, mental processes, emotions and sensations. He set out a guide to studying and understanding the component parts of our mind and body. This may seem somewhat esoteric, but in practice these are the elements by which all of our daily activities, intentions and responses are mediated. Once we understand the khandhas (aggregates) we begin to have insights into the path of liberation.
18 Aug : Dukkha - the heart of Buddhism
Dukkha - the Pali word for suffering, tension, dissatisfaction, stress. Buddhism is all about understanding dukkha. The 4 Noble Truths are built on the recognition of dukkha, understanding its causes, understanding how we can be liberated from it, and embarking on the path of liberation. Ajahn Sumedho says that Buddhism is all about the recognition of suffering, and the end of suffering. By looking into the heart of things that we least like, that scare us, that make us feel vulnerable or afraid - it is in these dark corners that we understand ourselves and the world and we begin to become free. Simon guides us in this dhamma talk.
