7 Apr : Loving kindness and other meditations
Buddhism places emphasis on developing the powers of our mind. This requires tutoring ourselves in various aspects of meditation. Meditation has a range of functions and applications. Each first Wednesday of the month we are exploring different techiques in meditation. This week focusses on two techniques: silent meditation in sitting position (attempting to find blissful silence inside the mind, a prerequisite for other insights); and metta or loving-kindness meditation - a technique of focussing feelings and intentions to resolve conflict and build self-esteem. Nigel guides one and half hours of meditation. All welcome.
14 Apr : Right livelihood - a life of wisdom and satisfaction
We spend much of our life working. Work can give us satisfaction or can create stress and worry. The Buddha advises us that 'right livelihood' is one of the elements of the holy life necessary for strengthening our wisdom and generating good kamma. Dé explores the elements of right livelihood in this week's dhamma talk followed by a meditation.
21 Apr : Self-esteem and a fulfilled life
Happiness - where does it come from? One element is self-esteem. Drawing on Buddhist teachings, Lionel explores the role of self-esteem and self-worth in achieving a satisfying life. Happiness is not everything in life, but it is an important foundation for other development and reducing suffering.
28 Apr : Relationships: intimacy, love and partnerships
Relationships can build us up, or pull us down. Some people can't find the partner they want, others seem to be blessed with great happiness. What is the secret to happiness and good relationships? This talk examines Buddhist approaches to relationships, including the sometimes challenging experience of being a Buddhist in a non-Buddhist family context.
