8 Sep : Lay Buddhism |
|
| |
Buddhism as a practice (Dhamma-vinaya) was built on a careful relationship between lay people and monastics. Buddhism flourishes in this interaction. Dé explores the lay side of this equation. What does it mean to be a lay Buddhist in South Africa, far from the heartland of the Sangha monastic traditions.

15 Sep : Dependent Origination |
|
| |
As part of our series of core Buddhism, Nigel offers this talk on dependent origination. The Buddha postulated that all things are manifested due to conditions which precede them. Nothing manifests without arising from some other condition. All things which manifest from conditionality will also be impermanent. The doctrine applies not only to physical objects, but also to mental states. The exception is full liberation, the ending of suffering, reaching the state of nibbana, enlightenment. The doctrine of paticca samuppada is closely tied to Buddhist teachings on the 3 characteristics of existence, on kamma and rebirth, the khandhas / aggregates, and in the understanding of the 8 Fold Noble Path.

22 Sep : Anger - the hot coal that burns twice |
|
| |
If Buddhism teaches westerners one thing, it is to be wary of anger and learn to step back from its awful impact and consequences. Anger is a normal emotion which can be triggered by many causes, however in Buddhist teachings it is a dangerous and harmful state, it does harm to the recipient, but it does twice as march harm to the person wielding it. Simon gives this easy to grasp dhamma talk on the Buddha's philosophy of doing no harm by action or intention.

29 Sep : Jataka Tales |
|
| |
Before the Buddha became enlightened he experienced thousands of lifetimes of learning and encounters which would eventually shape him to become the Awakened One. The lives of the pre-Buddha are collected in a compendium known as the Jataka Tales. These range from the amusing, to the profound, action packed stories to subtle lessons in ethics and wisdom. Evan guides us though some of his favourite Jataka Tales.
